Rockbridge Federal Custody Systems
Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the U.S. Marshals Service, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons do different work. ICE civil detention concerns immigration authority. The U.S. Marshals Service commonly handles federal pretrial detention and transport. BOP holds people committed after a federal sentence and operates its own inmate locator. A name missing from one system is not a result from the other two.
No official source reviewed identified a BOP institution, state prison, or confirmed ICE detention facility inside Rockbridge County. The research also found no ICE detention contract for Rockbridge Regional Jail. Federal channels become relevant only when a detainer, federal case, agency movement entry, or other reliable custody clue points to them.
| Authority | Custody role | Correct public route |
|---|---|---|
| ICE | Civil immigration detention and removal process | ICE Online Detainee Locator and ICE information line |
| U.S. Marshals | Federal pretrial custody, court production, and transport | Federal docket, holding agency, and focused USMS records request |
| BOP | Sentenced federal prison custody | BOP Inmate Locator and federal judgment |
| Rockbridge Regional Jail | Local or regional jail custody | Jail movement record and controlling court |
A federal criminal case can begin locally or involve temporary contract placement without making the regional jail a federal prison. The custodian on the date in question controls the most useful release or movement record.
Rockbridge Immigration Custody Transfers
A person can leave Rockbridge Regional Jail because ICE or the U.S. Marshals takes custody. That movement is a transfer, not community release. The local jail record should state the movement date, release or transfer code, and destination or receiving agency if maintained. Disappearance from a local list cannot answer where the person went.
Call Rockbridge Regional Jail at 540-464-1188 and ask two separate questions: whether the person is presently confined there and whether the last recorded movement was a community release or transfer. If staff identifies a transfer, request the receiving agency and movement date when available. Telephone limits do not prove that the person was released.
For documentary confirmation, address a narrow request to Rockbridge Regional Jail, 258 Greenhouse Road, Lexington, VA 24450. Ask for the existing booking and movement entry, including date and time, movement type or authority, and destination. The local record establishes the exit from the jail. The federal authority’s record establishes later detention or release.
Important: “Released to ICE,” “federal pickup,” and “USMS transfer” describe continued custody unless a later federal record confirms release.
ICE Detainee Locator Search
The official ICE Online Detainee Locator System, or ODLS, searches for a person currently detained by ICE or within the locator’s stated recent-release scope. It is not a Rockbridge County roster. Use it only when the jail record, detainer, lawyer, federal case, or another sound source indicates immigration custody.
The strongest search uses the nine-digit alien registration number, often called an A-number, plus country of birth. Add a leading zero when the known number has only eight digits. The other route uses exact biographical name, country of birth, and an optional birth date. Name order, spacing, and spelling can affect the result.
- Confirm that immigration custody is actually indicated. Do not send every missing local-jail name to ODLS.
- Search by the nine-digit A-number and country of birth when those details are lawfully available.
- If the number is unavailable, use the exact biographical name and country of birth, with birth date when helpful.
- Preserve the exact result wording and the time searched. Do not convert “not found” into a release statement.
- Call the ICE information line when identifiers, spelling, age limits, or a recent movement may explain the absence.
ODLS cannot search for minors under eighteen. That search limit is not a custody result. Contact the appropriate agency or legal representative when the person is under the locator’s age threshold.
ICE Recent Release Window
Official ICE attorney-resource guidance states that ODLS can include people currently detained or released from ICE custody within the last 60 days. The limited post-release window makes the search time-sensitive. A person who left ICE custody more than 60 days ago may no longer be returned through that recent-release scope.
An absence inside the window still proves little by itself. A name variation, wrong country of birth, incomplete A-number, delayed update, transfer, or other identifier issue may block the match. Outside the window, the system is not a promised historical release archive. Request the existing ICE record and check the controlling federal case instead.
A released ICE result applies only to ICE custody. It does not prove that local, state, federal criminal, or another civil authority has no active hold. Confirm destination and later custody when the movement chain includes more than one agency.
Note: Record the ODLS query date because the locator’s recent-release coverage is measured against a moving 60-day window.
ICE Custody Contact and Records
The ICE Detention Reporting and Information Line can help with detention questions that the locator does not resolve. Language assistance is available. Callers should prepare the A-number, full name, country of birth, birth date, and the last known detention or transfer details before calling.

For an existing federal record, use the ICE FOIA and Privacy Act route. Identify the person and the specific custody or release record, such as an admission, transfer, location, or release entry. Federal privacy and law-enforcement rules may restrict access to another person’s file. A request is not a guarantee of disclosure.
Ask for an existing record rather than a new explanation. Keep the request, delivery confirmation, tracking number, response, and any produced metadata. If another agency owns the record, follow the referral or submit a separate request to that custodian.
U.S. Marshals Custody Checks
Federal pretrial detainees are generally under U.S. Marshals responsibility and may be housed in a contract jail outside a BOP institution. A person may move among holding facilities for court, transport, safety, or bed-space reasons. The BOP locator can therefore return no match while USMS custody continues.
Start with the federal criminal docket. PACER provides federal case and order access, though an account and usage fees may apply. Read the detention order, release conditions, judgment, commitment, and later docket entries. A court order shows the legal action in that case, but the holding agency confirms the actual physical movement.
When authorized, submit a focused U.S. Marshals records request for the existing custody, transfer, or release entry. Use the federal case number, full legal name, date range, and known holding location. Privacy and law-enforcement exemptions can limit third-party information, so do not expect a full transport or security file.
Note: A missing BOP result is common for a federal pretrial detainee and should never be treated as proof of release.
BOP Versus Immigration Custody
The BOP Inmate Locator is the correct route for many sentenced federal prisoners. It searches by name with narrowing details or by BOP register, DCDC, FBI, or INS number. Depending on the record, results can include name, register number, age, race, sex, release information, and location or status.
A past release date with a released or no-facility result is useful evidence that BOP custody ended on that date. It does not prove freedom from ICE, state, local, or another authority. “Not in BOP custody” can also reflect community confinement or another non-BOP status. Read the detail with the federal judgment and later docket orders.
BOP’s searchable data generally covers federal inmates released after 1982. Older records may require the National Archives. A federal sentence may also change through First Step Act or other computations, so a projected date should not be confused with the completed release event.
Rockbridge ICE Release Chain
Rockbridge County’s key immigration-custody issue is the chain between agencies. ICE ODLS may show a person released from ICE custody only within its recent 60-day window. A local jail entry that says the person was released to an ICE detainer describes the start of ICE custody, not release to the community.
Write down the receiving agency and movement date before leaving the local record. Then use ODLS only when immigration custody is identified. If the receiver was the U.S. Marshals Service, use the federal docket and USMS route instead. If the person was committed to BOP, use the BOP locator. Similar federal labels do not make these systems interchangeable.
The ICE detention attorney resources state the locator’s current and recent-release scope. That official description provides the limit; it does not establish that Rockbridge Regional Jail has an ICE contract. No such contract was found in the reviewed official sources.
Federal Custody Release Records
A durable release check uses records from each custodian in order. The Rockbridge jail movement entry shows when local custody ended and where the person was sent. An ICE, USMS, or BOP record shows the later federal event. The federal court docket explains the criminal authority when a federal case exists.
| Record | What to request | What it proves |
|---|---|---|
| Rockbridge jail movement entry | Date, time, code, authority, receiving agency | Exit from the regional jail |
| ICE custody record | Admission, detention, transfer, and release entries | ICE custody events within the produced record |
| USMS record | Existing custody, holding, transfer, or release entry | Marshals custody event, subject to federal limits |
| BOP locator or record | Register number, location, status, release information | Federal prison custody or release event |
| Federal docket | Detention order, judgment, release order | Legal authority in the federal case |
Read a “no records” response literally. It may mean the agency never held the person, another custodian owns the record, identifiers were wrong, material is restricted, or the search window has passed. It is not a release certificate.
Confirm Federal Custody Release
First confirm the local exit. Next identify the federal receiver. Then use the correct locator and records office. Preserve exact labels, dates, and query times when sources disagree. A morning local movement and a later federal intake can both be correct at their respective times.
The Rockbridge County released inmate search provides the local jail and court path when the receiving authority is still unknown. Once a federal receiver is documented, stay with that agency until its release, transfer, or current-custody record resolves the next step.
Important: Community release is confirmed only after the final custodian’s record is checked and no recorded transfer destination is mistaken for freedom.
